Product information

Common Name

Pantanal Cory

Origin and Habitat

Brochis pantanalensis is native to the Pantanal region of South America, spanning parts of Brazil and Bolivia. It inhabits the Cussis and Las Petas river basins and the northern Pantanal floodplain. These vast wetlands are characterized by seasonal flooding, clear warm water, fine sandy or muddy substrates, and dense aquatic vegetation. Fish are often found in calm, shallow areas with gentle current, rooting through the substrate in groups.

Temperature and Water Conditions

Prefers temperatures between 72–82°F (22–28°C). pH range 6.0–7.5, with soft to moderately hard water. Stable, clean, and oxygen-rich water is key. Maintain excellent filtration, regular water changes, and gentle aeration.

Appearance and Size

Adults reach 5.5–6 cm (2–2.4 inches), sometimes up to 8 cm (3 inches). Base color is silvery-tan with a greenish-gold iridescent sheen and faint dark lateral markings. Females are larger and rounder; males slimmer and develop a darker reticulated pattern during breeding.

Diet in the Wild

In the wild, they sift sand and mud for small insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and organic detritus. Their sensitive barbels help detect tiny prey hidden in the substrate.

Feeding in Captivity

Readily accept sinking pellets, wafers, and frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. Provide a varied omnivorous diet and ensure food reaches the bottom. They also graze on leftover food and biofilm, helping keep the substrate clean.

Behavior and Tank Setup

A peaceful, social species best kept in groups of six or more. They explore the substrate and sometimes swim midwater. Use a soft sandy substrate to protect barbels, add driftwood, plants, and leaf litter for cover. A 20-gallon long or larger tank with gentle flow and high oxygen levels is ideal.

Breeding

Egg scatterers that spawn after conditioning with protein-rich foods and cooler water changes. Males chase females in the T-position before eggs are deposited on plants or glass. Adults may eat eggs; raise fry separately and feed newly hatched brine shrimp once free-swimming.
