Gold Gardneri Killifish
The species Fundulopanchax gardneri is native to the forested regions of Nigeria and Cameroon in West Africa. In the wild, they inhabit shallow forest streams, marshes, and small pools shaded by thick vegetation. These habitats are characterized by slow-moving water, sandy or muddy substrates, and abundant leaf litter and aquatic plants. The “Gold” form found in the aquarium trade does not exist in nature, as it is a selectively bred color morph developed through generations of captive breeding.
Fundulopanchax gardneri thrive in stable water between 22–26°C (72–79°F). Wild populations are found in slightly acidic to neutral water, usually within a pH range of 6.0–7.5. However, aquarium-bred strains are very adaptable. At Tropical Fish Co., we emphasize that maintaining consistent, clean water is far more important than chasing specific parameters. Adjustments should only be made for breeding purposes.
The Gold Gardneri displays a brilliant golden-yellow body covered in red spotting, with shimmering blue and green highlights under proper lighting. Males show more intense coloration and possess longer, flowing fins, while females are smaller and less vividly patterned. Males typically grow to around 6 cm (2.4 inches), and females remain slightly smaller.
In their natural range, Gardneri Killifish are micropredators feeding on small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, and crustaceans. They actively hunt near the surface and among submerged plants.
These fish accept a wide range of prepared and frozen foods. For best health and color, provide a varied diet including live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and bloodworms, along with a high-quality floating pellet or flake. Frequent small feedings bring out their most vibrant colors and encourage breeding behavior.
Fundulopanchax gardneri are lively and curious but generally peaceful. Males can be territorial, especially in confined spaces, so a single male with two or more females is ideal. They thrive in tanks with soft lighting, floating plants, and gentle filtration. A secure lid is essential, as they are known jumpers. Aquascapes with driftwood, dense vegetation, and subdued colors help bring out their natural confidence and beauty.
This species is an enthusiastic egg layer and one of the easiest killifish to breed. They deposit adhesive eggs among fine plants, spawning mops, or within peat or fine gravel. Depending on temperature, eggs hatch in about two to three weeks. Fry should be fed infusoria or freshly hatched brine shrimp. Dense plants or spawning mops help protect eggs and fry from adult fish.
The Gold Gardneri Killifish brings a flash of color and character to any freshwater setup. Hardy, adaptable, and full of personality, they are an ideal choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Their easy breeding and brilliant coloration make them a standout in planted aquariums. When kept in stable, clean conditions with a bit of floating cover and gentle water flow, few fish reward their keepers with such charm and vibrancy.
